Norfolk County Youth Orchestra (NYCO) was established in 2006 to enhance the breadth and quality of musical opportunities for young people in Norfolk. NCYO is a full symphony orchestra, performing three concerts each year. The Orchestra is made up of young players aged from 11 to 21 – all talented musicians from Norfolk schools.
The orchestra has around 4 day rehearsals each year and residential courses in October and April. NCYO gives both full orchestral concerts and performances by smaller chamber music ensembles. In the summer term the Orchestra undertakes a tour abroad and in recent years has visited Austria, Germany and France. In 2010 the Orchestra visited Novi Sad to celebrate 50 years of twinning with Norwich. Recent concerts include performances of the Dvorak Piano Concerto with Stephen Hough CBE, Elgar Cello concerto with Irena Josifoska (Winner, most promising Serbian musician) and Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano concerto with Peter Donohoe CBE.
Norfolk County Youth Orchestra offers a unique opportunity for Norfolk’s young musicians to enjoy performing music of the highest quality. The resident conductor of NCYO is Andrew Morley who has overseen continued success and critical acclaim for the orchestra over the last 3 years. NCYO players also have the opportunity to apply to the Triorca project, an international youth orchestra open to musicians from Norfolk, England; Koblenz, Germany and Novi Sad, Serbia. The artistic director and conductor of Triorca is Nicholas Daniel, winner off the Queens medal for music.
NCYO players take pride in their performance and acquire important life skills of team building, leadership, time management and self-confidence. Membership of NCYO is based on ability and many young players go on to very successful careers as professionals.
Applications are now closed. The next round of auditions will take place in July 2018.
It is important that no talented player is excluded because of financial circumstances, to which end The Friends of NCYO work to raise funds for the orchestra and all its members. Visit our website at www.ncyo.org.uk for more information about the orchestra and forthcoming events.
